What would it feel like to be content with yourself right now?

When we have experienced harm or been hurt it’s common to minimize our pain and dismiss our reality.  We may justify things by saying:

  • “It wasn’t that bad.”

  • “Other people had it worse.”

  • “They probably didn’t mean to.”

You’re not alone if you have difficulty validating whether your experience “counts” as traumatic. Trauma is defined by how it impacts your sense of safety and well-being, and isn’t necessarily things like serious accidents or disasters. Sometimes trauma is something that overwhelms you all at once. Other times, it’s the struggle of not having enough support or care for too long.

As a trauma-informed practice, we believe your individual experience matters and you deserve the care and attention needed to heal.

Trauma can shape the way you see yourself and the world around you

You may notice you’ve been feeling disconnected from yourself, being in relationships or environments that feel out of alignment, stuck in patterns you don’t want, or are unsure of how to cope when emotions get too overwhelming.

For many, living through traumatic experiences, or having a childhood that seems good but something seems off may lead to anxious thoughts that keep running through your mind. You may be feeling like you’re never enough, and oftentimes simultaneously too much for the people around you. Whatever your experience may be, it’s valid and real and it makes sense. And you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

Whether you feel damaged, unlovable, confused, or something else entirely, you have come by your experience honestly and you deserve support in your healing journey.

Therapy at North Texas Family Therapy is a place where you’re accepted as you are and wholly supported as you grow into the version of yourself you want to become.

Many trauma survivors don’t know how to prioritize themselves or have forgotten what it feels like to put themselves first

Everyone needs a basic sense of safety in order to thrive. Trauma often takes that away, leaving us feeling on edge, unprotected, and alone.

When we are in a traumatic situation or environment, our bodies and minds do what they can to help us survive, emotionally and physically.

Maybe you learned to stay quiet and keep to yourself. Maybe you focused on caring for others, even when your own needs went unmet. Maybe you learned to shrink parts of yourself so you wouldn’t take up too much space.

You took care of yourself in the way that you needed to at the time, with the tools you had available, in order to survive.

But you don’t have to use the tools for survival in the present.

What if things were different?

You may have gone through your traumas alone or with little to no support, it doesn’t have to be that way in your healing. With the right therapist, you can have a safe space to process your story and experiences and start moving into a version of yourself that feels “more you.”

All of North Texas Family Therapy’s clinicians are trauma-informed and have various levels of trauma training who show up as their authentic selves with compassion and curiosity so you can feel comfortable and confident in learning to receive support. You don’t have to carry this by yourself anymore. Healing is possible, and together we can help you reconnect with yourself and build the life you want.
