Your past may shape you, but it doesn’t have to define you.
You may feel like you’re carrying the weight of your past everywhere you go. Maybe you feel trapped in patterns you know are hurting you but don’t know how to change. You’ve tried to push through, avoid the memories, or tell yourself you should be able to handle it on your own. Instead, the frustration shows up in everyday life—through procrastination, conflict, substance use, isolation, or feeling overwhelmed by situations that seem manageable to everyone else.
You might find yourself thinking, “I can’t keep feeling this way,” “I always mess everything up,” or “I should be able to stop, but I can’t.” Even when you know a behavior is creating problems, it still feels like the only thing helping you get through the day. Maybe you have been searching for a therapist who understands why you react to situations the way you do, or you need someone who challenges the beliefs that keep you stuck, and teaches you practical ways to respond differently. Deep down, you are ready for something to change, but have no idea what that change is supposed to look like or where to begin.
In therapy, we’ll work together to understand the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. You show up exactly as you are, and together we work toward overcoming the challenges that may be holding you back. We may explore rigid thoughts such as “I have to do everything perfectly,” “I can’t handle this,” or “If I relapse, I’ve failed completely.” We’ll work toward replacing these demands with more flexible and realistic ways of thinking, so difficult experiences no longer have to determine your worth or control how you respond.
Therapy with Me is an Active and collaborative process.
To me, therapy is a partnership where we work side by side towards the life you want to create. I will take an active role by helping you recognize the thoughts and beliefs that may have you feeling stuck, while also teaching you practical skills that you can use in your everyday life. I believe that you are the expert on your own experiences, so your voice, goals, and perspective guide the work that we will do together. This isn't a vague or passive situation where I nod my head and parrot back what you are saying. I will directly and gently challenge you while creating a space that feels emotionally safe; where it's okay for you to take off the mask and not have to pretend that everything is fine. Together, we’ll celebrate your progress, work through setbacks with compassion, and build the confidence and tools you need to continue growing long after our sessions end.
I will ask gentle, but direct questions, offer a different perspective, and encourage you to practice skills between sessions. We may focus on tolerating uncomfortable emotions, reducing self-defeating behaviors, building self-worth, and responding to failure, rejection, criticism, or disappointment in healthier ways. The goal is not to pretend that painful experiences were acceptable, or to eliminate every difficult emotion, or act as if they didn’t happen. The goal is to help you live according to your values instead of being controlled by irrational demands and emotional reactions. You deserve a space where you can pursue these goals without feeling like your failures make your progress worthless.
I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Chemical Dependency Counseling at Southern Methodist University, with a concentration in Chemical Dependency Counseling. I also served as a Practicum Student Counselor at the SMU Center for Family Counseling and have training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
You are more than your past, your mistakes, your behaviors, or the things you have done to survive. We will work together to help you separate behavior from your self-worth. Making a mistake, failing, relapsing, or behaving badly does not make you a completely worthless person. Together, we can help you build a healthier relationship with your emotions and with others, make choices that reflect who you want to be, and begin creating a life that feels meaningful to you.
