Life can be tough and change can be beneficial. Big changes can bring up big feelings. You don’t have to feel them alone.
Change is inevitable and constant, and still, life transitions can be hard… navigating the uncertainty can lead to feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, and insecurity. You could be feeling excited about the next step, but still unsure about all that’s to come. Or if what you’re currently going through or the upcoming transition wasn’t expected or planned, maybe it’s bringing up more fear or trepidation. Perhaps you’re moving, starting a new job, or preparing for graduation. Or maybe you’re grieving the loss of a loved one, coping with a recent divorce, or dealing with a new stage of life. Whatever the case may be, life transitions can leave us feeling isolated, lacking purpose, and feeling unsure about our future.
At North Texas Family Therapy, we understand how upending change can feel. With your therapist, you’ll create a safe and non-judgmental space to explore what’s coming up for you. Our clinicians use trauma and systems-informed approaches to create a complete picture of your experience. Some clients may find it helpful to include a partner or family member in their work, but no matter what you need, sessions will move at your own pace. Our goal is to help you find your footing and create a toolbox of supportive coping skills amidst the changes happening for you now and in the future.
Clients often seek out therapy hoping that they’ll feel more confident, find meaning in new circumstances, and feel at peace with the changes happening. Together with your therapist, you can work towards acceptance and begin to discover authentic ways to feel more grounded and fulfilled in your life during transitional periods. Change may be difficult, and it can also be a time for newness and growth.
Meet Our therapists who specialize in life transitions
You’re not alone in feeling overwhelmed by change.
Transitions may happen often, but that doesn’t make them easy to navigate. Whether the change is positive, negative or neutral, it can bring up unexpected emotions.
There are changes that people commonly encounter throughout their lives, but even though these are more universal experiences, they still may not feel easy. Perhaps you’re starting high school, changing your major, beginning a new job, moving into a new place, learning something new about your identity, starting a family, or going through the loss of a friendship that was important to you.
If you’re in any kind of transition, you might be experiencing restlessness, noticing appetite changes, feeling out of control, struggling with sleep, or having increased feelings of anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. Another thing that can often be felt during transitional periods in your life, is grief. Leaving something, or someone, behind can bring up sadness, anger, and a wide range of other unfamiliar emotions.
You might be judging yourself for not adapting quickly or ruminating on thoughts like, “Who am I now?”, “What matters to me most?”, “Why can’t I get over this?” This can leave you feeling lonely, isolated, or misunderstood. The thing is, even in transitions that have the potential to improve things, people often feel safer in the familiar situation. Heading into the unknown can feel terrifying and your body might be telling you to avoid it, to prevent it from happening… or maybe even freezing, shutting down, and avoiding when the fear feels too big.
Acknowledging that what you are experiencing is normal can feel deeply reassuring. You are not the only person who has had these feelings, and we are here to help you through them. Therapy at NTFT provides a safe and consistent space for you to process emotions, discover more about your developing identity, and gain coping skills that better serve you. This work will help you become more self-aware, and find your renewed purpose.

Transitions, big or small, can leave you feeling upended, unsettled, anxious, and unsure of which way to turn. It can feel like you’re no longer on solid ground. -
We take a collaborative and client-centered approach, looking at each client as an individual, embedded in numerous systems, and tailoring the session to your needs, instead of using a cookie-cutter approach.
-
Our clinicians all work from a trauma-informed lens and are committed to building trust and creating a safe space for you. Sharing your story happens at your pace and your therapist is there to support you in the way you need. Change often feels uncomfortable and doesn’t feel great to our nervous systems; we honor that and work gently alongside you.
-
We use a variety of approaches in client sessions based on what you need. For example, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) may help with reframing anxious thoughts, mindfulness can reduce feelings of overwhelm, somatic work can help you find safety within yourself when things around you are changing, and relational/systemic interventions can make room for discussing relationship dynamics within the transition. You’ll learn new coping skills and continue building your resilience for the changes that have yet to come.
-
We will meet you where you are. When it seems as if everything around you is changing or like the floor is falling out beneath you, we want to provide you with a space to feel heard, seen, and understood. Transitional periods of life can feel difficult and hard to handle alone. Let us help as you encounter change and turn it into a growth opportunity while figuring out your new purpose.
-
Our clinicians have years of experience supporting clients through transitions of all kinds. Whether you’re adjusting to a new school, encountering a new health concern, or contemplating retirement… we see you. And we believe that with support and safety in place, you can move from feeling lonely and confused to feeling hopeful and grounded in your new experience.
